Plantations and Land
Under All is the Land…
Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "If a man owns the land, the land owns him." Here in the Lowcountry, we are the custodians of a treasure trove of natural beauty, pristine eco-systems and historic plantations. In the early 20th century, wealthy northern industrialists began to flock to the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina in search of hunting retreats where they could get away from the harsh northern winters as well as engage in the sporting life that they held so dear. They bought up many of the plantations that were no longer financially viable due to the collapse of the rice trade. Names like Vanderbilt, DuPont, Pulitzer and Guggenheim were only a few of the wealthy elite who had holdings in the Lowcountry. It is partly thanks to these individuals that we still enjoy so much natural landscape today, as many of their properties have been protected from future development. In recent years, we've seen a reversal of sorts and many of our historic properties have been re-acquired by southern families who are equally passionate about conservation. Today, land in the lowcountry is in higher demand than ever, but with the help of a dedicated professional, finding the ideal parcel can be a thrilling experience.
